THE TAMIL ASIL KNIFE FIGHTING BREEDS - GENERAL INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION


The Asil knife fighters are found in Western Tamilnadu. Pandiya Nadu of  Today's Tamil Nadu which includes Madurai, Thirunellveli etc. were famous for naked heel Asil fights, where as, Chera Nadu of Today's Tamil Nadu which includes Coimbatore, Udumalaipet, Karur is famous for knife fighters. The knife fighters must have been derived from old Naked Heel Asils. Cockfighting is one of the 64 kinds of Arts practiced by Tamils since ancient times for about 3500 years. It is also mentioned in ancient Tamil literature like Manu Needhi Sastiram, Kattu Seval Sastiram, and other sangam-age literature, 2,000 years old. 


BREED CLASSIFICATION OF TAMIL ASIL KNIFE FIGHTERS

There are as many as 500 varieties of Knife fighting Asil types found. They are divided based on color patterns of their wings, Legs, shape size etc.


CLASSIFICATION BASED ON SIZE
                In Tamil Nadu it is classified into two major types based on its size
                           1) Peruvadai (பெருவடை/peru.və.dəɪ/) - Large breeds
       2) Siruvadai(சிறுவடை/sɪru.və.dəɪ/) - Small breeds
